The Alzheimer’s Association is the only national voluntary organization in the United States dedicated to creating a world without Alzheimer’s disease while optimizing quality of life for individuals and their families. Its mission is to provide leadership to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research while enhancing care and support services for individuals and their families. Since its founding in 1980 by family caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Association has funded more than $82 million in Alzheimer research. It has nearly 200 chapters across the United States that provide education and support programs and services to Alzheimer families.

Goals

  • Mobilize worldwide resources, set priorities, and fund select projects for biomedical, social, and behavioral research.
  • Promote, develop, and disseminate educational programs and training guidelines for health and social service professionals.
  • Increase public awareness and concern for Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on individuals, families, and our diverse society.
  • Expand access to services, information, and optimal care techniques to maximize care and support for individuals and their families.
  • Build organizational capability throughout the association to ensure the most effective and efficient foundation for carrying out its mission.

Alzheimer’s Disease International

Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) is an umbrella organization of 50 Alzheimer associations around the world that offer support and advice to people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. ADI has an official relationship with the World Health Organization and is registered in Illinois (U.S.A.) as a not-for-profit organization.

Goals

  • Support members in their activities and encourage the formation of new associations.
  • Disseminate information.
  • Support an annual international conference focused on caregivers and caregiver organizations.
  • Collaborate with other international organizations with similar interests.
  • Stimulate public and political awareness at national and international levels.
  • Encourage research.

The first organization of its kind in the world, the Alzheimer Society of Canada was founded in 1978. Its mission is to alleviate the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and promote the search for a cause and cure.

Goals

The Alzheimer Society of Canada provides help for today and hope for tomorrow. Its strategic visions guide in planning for the future — promoting cooperation, coordination, and open communications throughout the Alzheimer Society. They include:

  • Help for today to people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.
  • The financial strength to meet emerging needs, the resources required to deliver and enrich existing programs, and the financial means to increase support for research.
  • The wealth and diversity of volunteer resources to fulfill the mission.
  • An effective voice to address Alzheimer issues.
  • Promotion of excellent and relevant research to help find answers.
  • Promotion of public awareness to make Alzheimer’s disease a major health and care issue among all Canadians.
  • One voice, a shared vision, and a common purpose.
